INVINCIBLE

I wrote this words starting from a conversation i had with a dear friend of mine and wanted to share my thought son Michael Jackson's album Invincible which i believe it's his most underrated work.
Don't compare Michael Jackson albums - they are different in style and musical view. From the instrumental arrangements to the lyrical content.

Invincible is a great work and it shifted MJ’s lyrics from HIStory's angry and darker feeling to a more confident approach on the events that shook his life and were offered more insight into his person rather then his persona.

All of his album are great - and for me is impossible to say one is better than the other - it would have take the event to all be released within the same period of time to assess their impact in that way - but that is not possible.

Thriller sold so good because it came at a time when mainstream music was lacking a lot in creativity and many artists (especially black artists) were overlooked by the music industry and the general public. And it was revolutionary in that way - it had the power to break through the race barrier.

I believe that Invincible was intentionally overlooked by the record company, it was a bad luck it came out little time before the 9/11 attack in NY (and people were not focused on music buying and certainly not feeling invincible), still it was a success selling over 10 million copies with 3 singles released, of which one had a video, no promotion (not for real anyway) , no tour to support it - that says a lot about how was received by the public - but this didn't made the news - is not interesting that he managed to have success even without the promoting way that he help developed (videos and the whole thing). That was his power - he could do nothing to promote a song or an album and still reach millions - check out sales and charts.

The album was voted by Billboard magazine readers's poll as the best of the decade In December 2009.

My friend wrote to me: “I think it's lucky for us fans to be able to learn more about MJ's world through his works, as he's gradually opening himself more and more since Dangerous through History to Invincible. This is the way MJ wanted us to know about him, rather than by reading tabloids. I find some lyrics in Invincible incredibly touching (as in most of his slow ballads). My current favourites from this album are Speechless, Heaven can wait, and You are my life.”

Personally i prefer Threatened - is funny and direct and cool. That is the first one that comes to mind followed at a very close range by all the others – Speechless, Whatever Happens, Cry, Unbreakable and so on.

Is also about the sound - I mean for me the best way to listen to his music is to plug in head phones and just enjoy the sound. Is like a multiple dimensions experience - there are the background vocals that he brought to perfection (one of the reason he was asked so many time to feature on other artists songs) there are the vocal and instrumental arrangements, there are the lyrics and so on and the sound effects - he pushed the limits of studio recording all the time.
I remember an interview with Rodney jerkins who was in the early 2000s the top producer who said he went into the studio with Michael and instead of doing the usual producing work he got to learn from the king new ways to record - like when everybody is eating the mic he would record from a corner and add a new effect on the recording and so on.

Sales of Michael’s albums have not kept at the level of thriller in terms of numbers (but here we must also take into consideration the overall shrinking of music industry, illegal CDs and internet P2P downloads) but that doesn't mean that his work was anything less than extraordinary.

It is impossible to recreate the time and social situation of the Thriller era, is hard to recreate the time and situation of the music industry back then, he opened the door and so many talented artist walked through and so is hard to now to get 50 million people to get focused on one album.

Invincible went against a lot of top competition much of which were MJ fans grown up and applying what they learn from him.

The music scene has changed so much from the 80's - back then the music industry was looking for the next sound and the generation leader and what we got was the number one of all time.

What I found most interesting about Invincible is that the selection of the songs had a different criterion - what he wanted to say to the world, to his children, to himself and other loved ones rather than wanting to put out another number one smashing album and that is why I believe is important and has a unique quality to it. Sometimes is important to do things that make you feel alright rather than trying to get everybody to like what you are doing. And what is most important is that he did that without sacrificing the quality of music.
Maybe it wasn't revolutionary sound-wise by some standards but it has SOUL.
And most of all it’s all about L.O.V.E.

With Invincible - MJ just took the kind of music/sound that he liked much at the time and upgraded it. Other than that it was an album (much like HIStory) where he didn't went for making trends or breaking records (though he did that) - he wanted to put good music out for his fans and managed to do that, he wanted to release some songs meant for his kids, songs aimed at reminding people about his beliefs and what could change this world for the better - it is a personal album.

All in one I say if you buy only one MJ album (if you ever manage to do that – I wish you good luck) - don't go for the obvious - go deeper and try to see into his soul - buy Invincible.

Michael, I recall you sitting on a chair in your bedroom staring ar the television watching the 1980 Grammy Awards show, crying to me because you only hab won one Grammy Award and you said, ´Watch La Toya, my next record I´m going to sell more records and win more Grammys than anyone in the history of music... I will be the biggest and greatest entertainer of all time´.

    You began to write that dream all troughout your bedroom, on the walls, on the mirrows, in your books and anywhere else you could find space. You strated working much harder, creating sounds in songs that the world had never heard before, you started dancing until you literally collapse. When most artists were trying to learn how to sing and to do a two-step, you were singing and moonwalking. You took your dream to a much higher level and turned it into a reality, a reality of over 100 million records sold on the next album, ´Thriller`. You thereafter continued to turn every one of your dreams into reality, while inspiring the world and becoming the most recognizable, the most well-known and the most loved person in the entire world.

    You´ve lived your dream, you´ve proven to us all that if you believe, you will achieve; you believed, and oh my, did you achieve! What you´ve accomplished is astounding-no one can ever possibly follow! Your dreams were so incredible that it made the world a much happier place to live, and the world wouldn´t let you rest because they demanded your dreams to transport them to another place!

    You´ve done your work here Michael, you´ve entertained us for decades and there´s nothing else that you can prove or accomplish here on earth.      Starting out in Gary, we were brothers who enjoyed music; we had no idea of what was to come. My memories of us as a family? Michael running through the house –no one could catch Michael, he was always on his feet. I watched as we moved from Gary to Los Angeles, from singing in clubs to filling stadiums. My brother Michael was always pushing it to the sky, as far as it could go. Michael put his heart and his soul into his music, his family and into his his work of alway helping others.

      My brother developed a shoe that showed resistance to gravity. What a man! Michael gave so much to the world; people didn´t understand his pain when the world started taking it back. He built a home that would provide a place where children who were ill and paralyzed could come find peace, enjoy the outside air and watch movies.

      My brother is in the Guinness Book of World Records for giving laege portions of donations to numerous charities. He gave and he never thought twice. I watched the light in Michaels eyes fade as he faced trials and tribulations for being misunderstood. Michael kept going with a smile and a grace of simply keeping what he stands for and believes in. Michael hast left me and my brothers a lagacy, a pert of us being part of history. I am proud to be his big brother, I am proud to have watched his talent succeed above all!

I love him.

"I Have Abandoned Him" - Madonna´s VMA Speech

The VMAs 2009 opened the show with a long speech about Michael. A performance by Janet Jackson followed. The show closed with a look at This Is It. While Janet Jackson´s performance was expected, Madonna´s speech was not - and therefore (for me) even more surprising.

Some people passed critisim on Madonna, because she had spoken more about herself than about Michael Jackson. From my point of view the speech became really moving in parts, especially when Madonna stated to feel guilt of having abandoned him.  I found her being very honestly saying that  they weren´t close friend. She honored MJ as the bigest star of entertainment -what he of course is.....Nevertheless that’s a big statement- coming from her, probably the only close competitor MJ could ever have ... and I am nothing but thankful for her words.



"Michael Jackson. [Cheers] I have a little bit more to say than that. OK, here we go again. Michael Jackson was born in August 1958. So was I. Michael Jackson grew up in the suburbs of the Midwest. So did I. Michael Jackson had eight brothers and sisters. So do I. When Michael Jackson was six, he became a superstar, and was perhaps the world’s most beloved child. When I was six, my mother died. I think he got the shorter end of the stick. I never had a mother, but he never had a childhood. And when you never get to have something, you become obsessed by it.


I spent my childhood searching for my mother figures. Sometimes I was successful, but how do you recreate your childhood when you are under the magnifying glass of the world?


There is no question that Michael Jackson is one of the greatest talents the world has ever known. That when he sang a song at the ripe old age of eight he could make you feel like an experienced adult was squeezing your heart with his words. That when he moved he had the elegance of Fred Astaire and packed the punch of Muhammad Ali. That his music had an extra layer of inexplicable magic that didn’t just make you want to dance but actually made you believe you could fly, dare to dream, be anything that you wanted to be. Because that is what heroes do and Michael Jackson was a hero.


He performed in soccer stadiums around the world, and sold hundreds of millions of records and dined with prime ministers and presidents. Girls fell in love with him, boys fell in love with him, everyone wanted to dance like him. He seemed otherworldly — but he was a human being.


Like most performers he was shy and plagued with insecurities. I can’t say we were great friends, but in 1991 I decided I wanted to try to get to know him better. I asked him out to dinner, I said “My treat, I’ll drive — just you and me.”


He agreed and showed up to my house without any bodyguards. We drove to the restaurant in my car. It was dark out, but he was still wearing sunglasses.

I said, “Michael, I feel like I’m talking to a limousine. Do you think you can take off your glasses so I can see your eyes?”

 
Then he tossed the glasses out the window, looked at me with a wink and a smile and said, “Can you see me now? Is that better?”

In that moment, I could see both his vulnerability and his charm. The rest of the dinner, I was hellbent on getting him to eat French fries, drink wine, have dessert and say bad words. Things he never seemed to allow himself to do. Later we went back to my house to watch a movie and sat on the couch like two kids, and somewhere in the middle of the movie, his hand snuck over and held mine.


It felt like he was looking for more of a friend than a romance, and I was happy to oblige. In that moment, he didn’t feel like a superstar. He felt like a human being.

 We went out a few more times together, and then for one reason or another we fell out of touch. Then the witch hunt began, and it seemed like one negative story after another was coming out about Michael. I felt his pain, I know what it’s like to walk down the street and feel like the whole world is turned against you. I know what it’s like to feel helpless and unable to defend yourself because the roar of the lynch mob is so loud you feel like your voice can never be heard.

 But I had a childhood, and I was allowed to make mistakes and find my own way in the world without the glare of the spotlight.


When I first heard that Michael had died, I was in London, days away from the start of my tour. Michael was going to perform in the same venue as me a week later. All I could think about in this moment was, “I had abandoned him.” That we had abandoned him. That we had allowed this magnificent creature who had once set the world on fire to somehow slip through the cracks. While he was trying to build a family and rebuild his career, we were all passing judgement. Most of us had turned our backs on him. In a desperate attempt to hold onto his memory, I went on the internet to watch old clips of him dancing and singing on TV and on stage and I thought, “my God, he was so unique, so original, so rare, and there will never be anyone like him again. He was a king.”

 But he was also a human being, and alas we are all human beings and sometimes we have to lose things before we can appreciate them. I want to end this on a positive note and say that my sons, age nine and four, are obsessed with Michael Jackson. There’s a whole lot of crotch grabbing and moon walking going on in my house. And, it seems like a whole new generation of kids have discovered his genius and are bringing him to life again. I hope that wherever Michael is right now he is smiling about this.

 Yes, Michael Jackson was a human being but he was a king. Long live the king.

Hello everybody.
Hello to you wonderful people of Exeter.
To the great supporters of the Exeter City Football Club.
Welcome to all the great fans that have come from here and far.
To all you children.

I’m very happy, very happy to be here with you today. Today, today we come here to support children. We come here to support children with AIDS. To help, to help beyond these of those affected by HIV and AIDS. We will help them to build a good future. All of us working together for them.
A future without prejudice. For these children and their families. We are here to support and help the people of Africa to find a solution in the fight against the swear of HIV AIDS ... and malaria ... through education and awareness, we aim at conviction but we help with cure.
We are here to support you, the supporters and players of this great football club.

Sadly, sadly, we live in a state of fear.
Everyday we hear of war on the news, on the radio and television and the newspapers, always of war.
We hear of nations hurting each other, of neighbors hurting each other, of families hurting each other and the children killing each other.

We must learn to live and love each other before it’s too late.
We have to stop!
We have to stop the prejudice, we have to stop the hating, we have to stop living in fear of our own neighbors.

Dr.Maya Angelou  dedicated this very beautiful poem to Michael Jackson after his death for the Memorial Service. Queen Latifah was the celebrity to read it to the crowd of people on July, 7th at The Staples Centre, Los Angeles.

I knew Michael as a child and watched him grow over the years. Of all the thousands of entertainers I have worked with, Michael was THE most outstanding. Many have tried and will try to copy him, but his talent will never be matched

Millions will forever remember where they were the day Michael Jackson transcended this world. Lisa Marie Presley´s touching statement

After June25, we were flooded through the mass media, by people talking about Michael Jackson  and how "close" they have been to him,  for how long they have been collaborating  and finally  became "best friends". What it all comes down to: I can not and do not have to judge whether or not someone has really been a good friend to Michael Jackson. Make up your own decision. In the end it seems that he has not  had many true friends! Do good friends sell tapes with conversations or publish private photos and films from a beloved person on the internet?

Thank God there have been persons in Michael Jackson´s  life who were not at all interested in monetizing their relationship with him  in any regards. Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor is one of those friends for lifetime.

A very special person who without any doubt was very, very close to him, is his former wife Lisa Marie Presley. She shared the upcoming awsome words on MySpace.

Dear Lisa Marie Presley, thank you for your words. Very much appreciated! I do hope that you have overcome  your sense of guilt and will at last be able to cherish the years you had and all your memories with L.O.V.E. You did not fail to help him - it´s more that no one was able to that. "He Knew.


Years ago Michael and I were having a deep conversation about life in general.


I can't recall the exact subject matter but he may have been questioning me about the circumstances of my

Fathers Death.

At some point he paused, he stared at me very intensely and he stated with an almost calm certainty, "I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he did."


I promptly tried to deter him from the idea, at which point he just shrugged his shoulders and nodded almost matter of fact as if to let me know, he knew what he knew and that was kind of that.


14 years later I am sitting here watching on the news an ambulance leaves the driveway of his home, the big gates, the crowds outside the gates, the coverage, the crowds outside the hospital, the Cause of death and what may have led up to it and the memory of this conversation hit me, as did the unstoppable tears.


A predicted ending by him, by loved ones and by me, but what I didn't predict was how much it was going to hurt when it finally happened.


The person I failed to help is being transferred right now to the LA County Coroners office for his Autopsy.
All of my indifference and detachment that I worked so hard to achieve over the years has just gone into the bowels of hell and right now I am gutted.


I am going to say now what I have never said before because I want the truth out there for once.


Our relationship was not "a sham" as is being reported in the press. It was an unusual relationship yes, where two unusual people who did not live or know a "Normal life" found a connection, perhaps with some suspect timing on his part. Nonetheless, I do believe he loved me as much as he could love anyone and I loved him very much.


I wanted to "save him" I wanted to save him from the inevitable which is what has just happened.


His family and his loved ones also wanted to save him from this as well but didn't know how and this was 14 years ago. We all worried that this would be the outcome then.


At that time, In trying to save him, I almost lost myself.


He was an incredibly dynamic force and power that was not to be underestimated.
When he used it for something good, It was the best and when he used it for something bad, It was really, REALLY bad.


Mediocrity was not a concept that would even for a second enter Michael Jackson's being or actions.


I became very ill and emotionally/ spiritually exhausted in my quest to save him from certain self-destructive behavior and from the awful vampires and leeches he would always manage to magnetize around him.


I was in over my head while trying.


I had my children to care for, I had to make a decision.


The hardest decision I have ever had to make, which was to walk away and let his fate have him, even though I desperately loved him and tried to stop or reverse it somehow.


After the Divorce, I spent a few years obsessing about him and what I could have done different, in regret.


Then I spent some angry years at the whole situation.


At some point, I truly became Indifferent, until now.


As I sit here overwhelmed with sadness, reflection and confusion at what was my biggest failure to date, watching on the news almost play by play The exact Scenario I saw happen on August 16th, 1977 happening again right now with Michael (A sight I never wanted to see again) just as he predicted, I am truly, truly gutted.


Any ill experience or words I have felt towards him in the past has just died inside of me along with him.


He was an amazing person and I am lucky to have gotten as close to him as I did and to have had the many experiences and years that we had together.


I desperately hope that he can be relieved from his pain, pressure and turmoil now.


He deserves to be free from all of that and I hope he is in a better place or will be.


I also hope that anyone else who feels they have failed to help him can be set free because he hopefully finally is.


The World is in shock but somehow he knew exactly how his fate would be played out some day more than anyone else knew, and he was right.
