Children's Day, September 21st, 2013 - International Day of Peace

 The UN passed the resolution for a world peace day in 1981 and in the next year the day was first observed as International Day of Peace.
The theme chosen for this year's International Day of Peace is "Education for Peace", in recognition of the importance of educating people about consequences of war on our children, our environment and on every aspect of life with the intent to reduce the probability of wars prolonging and expanding and thus holding captive our spirits and killing our loved ones.

War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent.”

Educating ourselves, our children and people around us will improve our understanding of the world and each other. Getting to know ourselves, the others and the world in which we live will bring us closer to finding a solution to our disagreements and making wars just part of our history. And most of all we need to rediscover our connections.

The end of war is within our power. Now I know I cannot stop the conflict in Syria, or the violence in Sudan, but I can donate, I can sign a petition, I can raise awareness to a cause, I can post a tweet or a Facebook update that will state my believes or help spread the word, I can participate in public debates and in the political process in my country, I can learn, I can open my heart and my mind, I can pray, I will.

Justice for Michael

Justice for Michael has become the one cry that raises above all in the Michael Jackson fan community. During the 2005 trial it was what kept us going through and showed Michael he was not alone in his fight and showed the world that Michael meant so much to so many people.
After June 25th, 2009 Justice for Michael become an outcry of pain and sorrow and as details of how Michael died we all wanted for the doctor and the others to be brought to justice.
This year with the wrongful death trial Justice for Michael is a way of keeping strong through the details and attitudes and the grief.
And all that was and is amazing.
But Justice for Michael should mean more.
The success with the Jackson 5, the success with the Jacksons and as a solo artist, his talent, his work has brought him great joy, admiration, millions of fans but also envy and hate. For braking barriers, for reaching new heights, for transforming the music industry and for doing that while speaking in a soft voice. That contrast between the fierce artist and shy person has brought much comments, a lot of them mean and in tabloid style.
But in my opinion it wasn't the commercial success that attracted the hate. It was the raising up of his voice and profiting the success of Thriller and his work and starting to push for a message that brought together millions and made it possible for me to call family someone from Hong Kong, some people from the USA, some people from Germany, someone from Argentina. And I am sure I am not the only one who can say that.
And it is not like he started to be preoccupied about the state of the world and the well being of children after the sparkle dust from Thriller mania settled down. He was involved with charities and helping people from an early age. His music contained his concerns and expressed his willingness to act. His actions spoke of his kindness and determination to make a change within himself and bring people together for a better future. It's usually things that we admire in the people around us.
Yet he was ridiculed and criticized for it in many situations. His advocacy for children causes has been used as a way in to hurt him and since there was no way of limiting his talent and creativity people (and corporations) tried, and succeeded  at times, to control his outreach around the world with the help of mud throwing.
If you take any Michael Jackson album review most critics you'll find are about the songs with messages about the greater good. With few exception. Even to the point where I felt some people wouldn't allow for him be anything else but a dance floor wonder. He was supposed to come up with as many Billie Jean as possible.
I don't intend to go further in this direction.
What for me would truly mean Justice for Michael is that Earth Song, Heal the World, Cry, They Don't Care About Us, Be Not Always, Another Part Of Me, Why You Wanna Trip On Me, Man In The Mirror, The Lost Children, We Are The World would be the most viewed and most listened songs.
I got nothing against Thriller. Or any other song. I love them all. Equally - even though I do prefer one over the other depending on the state of mind I am in just like everybody.
But when these songs will be most talked about and consequently reach that many people, when his work as a humanitarian and environmentalist will be recognize in full, then Justice for Michael would have been achieved.

And what is most amazing is all the people working towards that.

 I miss you Michael.

Children's Day June 22nd, 2013 - Grandparents

Maybe the title might look strange but if you follow the links embedded in the text you will understand my choice.
A couple of weeks ago I found an article online about a study which finding was that increased longevity evolves from grandmothering.
There are a number of studies that show a direct connection between improved nutrition and survival of children and grandmothers (a study conducted in Gambia) or that the role of grandparents becomes increasingly more important as society and families change and the influence they have on the lives of children and adolescents and on children  positive outcomes.

The theory about  the impact of grandparents in human evolution might be in the future contradicted or confirmed but there is an undeniable tie between each of us and our grandparents.
And they don't have to be blood family.
My grandparents (including great-grandparents) have been a huge influence into who I am today. With good (and there is so much of that) and bad they have been a source for love, knowledge, power, wisdom. We didn't/don't always see eye to eye, not always agree but around my grandparents are magic places where family comes together. And that matters a lot.

June 20 was World Refugee Day. The theme for this year was FAMILY.

"There are now more than 45 million refugees and internally displaced people  
the highest level in nearly 20 years. Figures give only a glimpse of this enormous human tragedy. Every day, conflict tears apart the lives of thousands of families. They may be forced to leave loved ones behind or become separated in the chaos of war."

Death, losing family members, having to flea and abandon homes, living in overcrowded refugee camps with little resources, being separated from family, physical and emotional trauma become the reality and the familiar.
So many children around the world are denied the opportunity to grow without the concern for violence or starving. So many children are denied the opportunity to grow and benefit from their grandparents love and so being denied access to a part of self they will never get back.
Love is never broken. Soul connections will never disappear without trace. But what will be able to replace the time they never get to share...

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Katherine Jackson


Especially in these rough times during the trial versus AEG we are sending out our love to Mrs K. Jackson, not only on the occasion of her birthday.
We know that she does not celebrate her birthday as a special day, but we also know that positive vibes and best wishes never can miss the mark...
Michael perfectly worded his love and appreciation for his mother in the poem below. Since we are close to international "Mother´s Day" the poem might be the right reminder to all of us to be grateful for the blessings our own mother has been and still is in our personal life...

Children's Day - April 22nd, 2013 Earth Day

Today is Earth Day.
And for our blog is Children's Day. It seams fit to compile them in one post.

 How many times did you heard or said that children just don't play as the previous generations did. We talk video games, computers, how many dangers are just around the corner of the street. But we very rarely discuss environmental factors.
Part of why the children's play habits have changed is the way we relate and treat the world around us.
We talk about creating a better world for our children through innovation and progress to be made but we won't be able to compensate the damage done to our planet. 
Pollution and environmental changes are part of much suffering around the world from the Horn of Africa to the US East Coast. Contaminated water sources, contaminated land, less green spaces to run and play, air so hard to breathe that makes the "light as air" saying be obsolete, destruction and loss of species do not make for a better world.

We should not stop growing and developing but it is essential for present and future generation to reduce our impact on the living system that is supporting and ensuring our existence.



Mother Earth

I was walking along the beach one winter day. Looking down, I saw a wave push a feather up on the sand. It was a sea gull feather stained with oil. I picked it up and felt the dark slick film on my fingers. I couldn't help wondering if the bird had survived. Was it all right out there? I knew it wasn't.

I felt sad to think how carelessly we treat our home. The earth we all share is not just a rock tossed through space but a living, nurturing being. She cares for us; she deserves our care in return. We've been treating Mother Earth the way some people treat a rental apartment. Just trash it and move on.

But there's no place to move on to now. We have brought our garbage and our wars and our racism to every part of the world. We must begin to clean her up, and that means cleaning up our own hearts and minds first, because they led us to poison our dear planet. The sooner we change, the easier it will be to feel our love for Mother Earth and the love she so freely gives back to us.

Toy Story: The Richest Children Are Most Possesive

The italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti shares a beautiful essay on the internet, showing that kids from all over the planet love the same things. Paging through his thought provoking photos and words and introducing them to our friends and visitors on this blog was beyond question.

Though the toys of the children are reflective of their material prosperity and the parent´s economis status each child is born to. The toys tell much more about those who bought them than they can tell about the children who cherish them as their possesion.

All they want to do is playing.

The fact, that it is finally essential for children to play, should be a lesson, what we as adults all over the world already should have learned.
We have to give our the children the time and space they need instead of picking them up after school and drive them to organized freetime activities. Children have so much creativity that playing is not that much a question of material things (kids love stuffed animals, toy cars and dolls, and electronic games as well, though). Playing is a matter of  internal and external conditions and we should work harder to encourage children to devolop creativity and self-determined estivated time. Children do not suffer the lack of perfect produced industrial toys since they their imagination is strong enough to play with a rag doll instead of a "Barbie", to imagine a pebble stone becoming a racing car, or to go in rags and playing to be a most beautifully dressed princess. One more time children teach us: less can be more...

Before the shooting while they arraged the toys, G. Galimberti did note, that it seems to differ from county to country how the children play. Children in richer countries are more possesive with their toys and did not allow him spontanously to play with their toys. The children from poorer countries were found easier to interact and to share their possesions.

Abel - Nopaltepec, Mexico
"Abel, the third of five children, was born and raised in the small town of Nopaltepec, about an hour southeast of Mexico City. In this photo he’s posing with all of his games. He loves to race with his toy cars, and sometimes plays with them with his younger sister."

Bethsaida - Port au Prince, Haiti 
"Bethsaida was born in Port-au-Prince where she has always lived in a house with her family since, almost 2 years ago, a big earthquake distroyed it. Her parents are both deaf and dumb but fortunately she’s not. Now they live in a camp site out of the city. The camp was built from an american NGO which works with deaf and dumbs, so in the camps almost 90% of the people can’t hear and talk. All the toys that Bethsaida has are donated from the NGO. She wants to be a hairdresser and loves combing her doll to practice, but unfortunately her brother has cut off half of the hair of the doll."

Li Yi Chen - Shenyang, China    
"Li Yi was born in Shenyang, a big city in the north part of China. He lives with his parents and his grandmother in a small appartment in the south suburb of the city. His favourite toys are the guns. He loves to put little boxes above the table and then i likes to shoot at them rubbers bullets with the gun. He also love to play with the YoYo because his favourite character of cartoon uses the YoYo like a weapon.

 Alessia - Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy
"Alessia was born and raised in the country, her family owns one of the largest farms in the city. She loves to play with animals and helping her grandfather with the work of the farm. With her small tools she brings food to the many Chianina cows."

 Botlhe - Maun, Botswana
"Botlhe has a lot of friends, and all of them live really close by to the small house where she lives with her family in a residential complex. In the complex, there is one toilet for every four families. Botlhe has only one toy, the monkey, but she almost never plays with it because she prefers to go out with friends and play with them."

 "Naya - Managua, Nicaragua
has few small cook tools but she never gets bored to play with them. She uses mud and grass from the garden to pretend to cook some cakes for her older sister. She says that in the future she will manage a restaurant and she’s sure that turists will love it!"

 Allenah - El Nido, Philippines 
"Allenah Lajallab was born and raised in El Nido, a small town north of Palawan in the Philippines. In El Nido there weren’t hospitals and she was born at home. She has a lot of stuffed animals, and her favorite is the orange one because she loves the color. She doesn’t like the white stuffed animal as much, because it gets dirty too easily."

                                                  Chiwa - Mchinji, Malawi
"Chiwa lives in a small hut with her mother, father and sister. They don’t have electricity and running water. Chiwa used to help her mother to carry water at home from the river. In the village there are other 50 children (more or less) and they always plays all together outside. Chiwa has just 3 toys that some volonteers of an NGO gave to her when she was born. Her favourite is the dinosaurus because she says that he can protect her from the dangerous animals."

Orly - Brownsville, Texas 
Orly was born in Browsville from a Mexican mother and American father.He has never been in Mexico, 2 miles south of his house and his mother hopes that he will never go there because, she says, it is a dangerous place.He loves dinosaurs. He says that those that fly over his bed protect him from ghosts and from the mexican people that might kidnap him.

                               Arafa & Aisha - Bububu, Zanzibar
Arafa and Aisha are twins. They sleep in the same bed, have the same clothes, go to school together and share the same toys. They live in a two-room house in which both of the rooms are bedrooms, and the kitchen and restroom are outside. The big photo above the closet is a portrait of the formal president of Zanzibar.

Cun Zi Yi - Chongqing, China
"Cun Zi Yi just turned 3, and received a lot of gifts for her birthday. She plays with everything and can’t choose her favorite toy. Her parents say that she’s really good at painting, and will be an artist when she grows up."

                                                 Pavel - Kiev, Ukraine
"Pavel doesn’t have any doubts: he wants to be a police man. He loves guns and plays with them all the time. His younger brother is always under “Pavel’s arrest.” Pavel handcuffs him, questions him and accuses him of stealing cars. Sometimes he lets his brother be the police man, but only when other friends come over and become the “bad people” Pavel wants to arrest!"

G. Galimberti experiences show what most of us might have discovered in our own lifes: most of the people tend to become  less giving the more they posess. This result is a strong task for putting love first instead of material things. ( Though Pavel doesn´t seem to grow up in poverty, I am much more worried about his mental well being than about Botlhe´s  from Botswana.) Let´s take care about our children with more love, giving them much more time and  patience instead of showering them with  industrial produced presents. 
Remember....what are your most cherished moments in your childhood?

In kindergarden and at home we arranged a toy abstinence for 3 or 4  weeks once a year. All the toys became cased and stored on the garrett. The only things at the children´s disposal were drawing paper, colored crayons, and picture books. Outside they could play in the sand box and everything the garden offers. (Did you ever experience what a great playground a puddle can be?)
The first time on "toy diet" was always hard, because creativity seems to vanish the more toys are at one´s disposal. But after some time playing with self created stuff became more and more fun. After weeks the unpacking of the old stored toys brought kind of christmas feeling every weekend when we got a parcel from the garrett.
